What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process through which you can obtain qualifications based on your unique set of skills and experience. RPL is recognized under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as a method of obtaining qualifications and licences, which does not involve study, exams, or attendance at school.
The RPL process is relatively straightforward, and is also honest and transparent.
First of all, we will obtain your work history, skill set, and educational attainment, as well as details of any courses you may have started or completed in the past. Next, we identify a course that matches your own preferences, as well as your unique set of skills and experiences. Finally, we will liaise with Registered Training Organisations to get you certified.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)?
RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is an assessment process under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) that allows people with relevant work experience, skills, and knowledge to have that experience formally assessed against a qualification’s competency standards. If the assessment confirms your skills meet the requirements, you receive the nationally recognised qualification — without completing further study or training.
What qualification will I receive through RPL?
You will receive a nationally recognised AQF qualification issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The specific qualification depends on your trade or industry. Fast RPL will confirm which qualification is appropriate for your skills and career goals before the process begins.
Is RPL the same as getting a trade licence?
No. RPL delivers a nationally recognised qualification. Licensing — such as a builder’s licence, plumber’s licence, or electrical contractor licence — is a separate matter administered by the relevant state or territory authority. In many cases, a specific qualification is required before applying for a licence. Fast RPL can guide you on the qualification pathway that supports your licensing goal in your state.
How long does the RPL process take?
The timeline varies depending on the qualification, the amount of evidence you can provide, and the RTO’s assessment schedule. Many clients receive their qualification within a few weeks of completing the evidence submission. Fast RPL will give you an indicative timeline when we assess your case.
What evidence do I need to provide for RPL?
Evidence typically includes: a record of your work history and employment references, examples of work you have completed (photos, project records, logbooks), any previous training records or partial qualifications, and a skills assessment interview or written responses to competency questions. Fast RPL guides you through what evidence is needed for your specific qualification.
Does my overseas experience count for RPL?
Yes — experience gained overseas is eligible for consideration in an RPL assessment. The assessor evaluates your skills against Australian qualification standards. Documentation such as employment records, references from overseas employers, and photos of completed work all help support an overseas experience claim. Fast RPL has experience working with clients whose skills were developed internationally.
Do I need to attend classes or sit exams?
No. RPL is an assessment-based process, not a training course. You do not attend classes, complete assignments, or sit exams. You demonstrate your existing skills and knowledge through evidence and, in some cases, a skills interview or practical demonstration.
Is RPL available in all Australian states and territories?
Yes. RPL is available nationally and the qualifications issued through the process are recognised under the AQF across all Australian states and territories. Fast RPL assists clients in NSW, QLD, VIC, WA, SA, ACT, NT, and TAS.
How do I know if I am eligible for RPL?
Eligibility depends on your work history and the qualification you are seeking. As a general guide, if you have been working in your trade or industry for two or more years and can demonstrate the skills and knowledge that the qualification covers, you are likely to be a suitable candidate. Fast RPL offers a free initial eligibility assessment — contact us to discuss your background.
How much does RPL cost?
RPL fees vary depending on the qualification and the complexity of the assessment. Fast RPL provides transparent, upfront pricing with no hidden costs. Contact us for a quote based on your specific qualification needs.
